A fast highway connects Istanbul with Izmit, the capital of the province of Kocaeli. An important city in Roman times, when it was known as Nicomedeia, it is now a prosperous industrial city.The Saatci Efendi Konak, a restored Ottoman style typical of the 18 Century, is now a museum of ethnology. Pismaniye, the local sweet, consists of thousands of thin layers of stretched sugar. Hereke, west of lzmit is a major carpet making center. Renowned throughout the world for their beauty and quality to get these carpets the highest prices in Istanbul bazaars. On the Black Sea coast, north of lzmit, especially in Kerpe, Kefken and Kovanagzi, sandy beaches and comfortable houses attract vacationers. lzmit East of Sakarya is the provincial capital of the province of Adapazari, a major agricultural and industrial region. The Sakarya (Sangarius) river water, this fertile land, rich with fruit trees and fields of vegetables. In the city of Adapazari itself, the Atatürk Museum and a number of tne Ethnograpnicai display personal effects of the founder of the Turkish Republic as well as local artifacts. The Beskopru Bridge, built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 553, stretches 429 feet above the River. Eight arches connect the two banks. |

| A few miles away at Lake Sapanca, quiet hotels and restaurants line the shore. Istanbulites this retreat in the mountain basin Saman througnout flight of the year. Originally, one important Roman and Byzantine town, it fell to the Seljuks in 1078 and then to the Ottomans in 1331st Even a small town, it seems not to be exceeded its original Roman walls have. The four gates which access may be available to the city. In the center of the city the ruins of St. Sophia Cathedral, the seat of the first Ecumenical Council of 325, evoke images of convening bishops and clergy. In the 16th and 17 Century, lznik center of production of the exquisite ceramic goods, such an important decorative contribution to mosques and palaces throughout Turkey. A museum displays the finds from the nearby excavations.Among important Islamic buildings in the city, you have to visit the turquoise tiled Yesil Mosque and Nilufer Hatun Imareti.After explore the sights, the lakeside fish restaurants offer delicious food and a relaxed atmosphere. Yenisehir, on the road to Bursa, is filled with many interesting and lovely old Turkish houses.The 18th Konak Semaki century, now restored as a museum, welcomes visitors. |

| The province is located south of Bilecik lznik in the green and fertile valley of the river Sakarya.In the old quarter of the city stands the mausoleum of Sheikh Edebali, an important influence in the founding of the Ottoman Empire. Every September, a memorial and cultural festival is held in his honor. Near his tomb is the Orhan Gazi Mosque. Amidst the numerous willows which Sogut his name, a detour to give to this city eftort. The migration of Kayi Turks first settled here, and the grave of their leader Ertugrul Gazi stands in the city. In September, a memorial service will be in his honor. Other tourist attractions are the life-size busts of famous figures from Turkish history and the Ethnographic Museum, which traces, through its displays, the history of Turkey. |
